Washington, DC—The Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions (FDPS) applauds the introduction in the U.S. House of Representatives of the Youth Substance Use Prevention and Awareness Act.
“The Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions is proud to support the Youth Substance Use Prevention and Awareness Act, vital legislation that will help to rebuild our nation’s drug prevention infrastructure,” said FDPS CEO Kevin Sabet. “In an age where young people are buying drugs and seeing drug promotions on social media, public service announcements aimed at preventing substance use before it starts are critical. We commend Reps. Derek Tran, Jeff Hurd, and Madeleine Dean for supporting evidence-based drug prevention messaging that will save young lives.
“Their bipartisan stand deserves praise and shows that America’s legislators can come together to defend the public interest across party lines. Sens. Mark Kelly, Thom Tillis, and Chris Coons showed similar bipartisan courage when they introduced the Senate version of the bill in May.
“Prevention is all the more essential in the wake of President Trump’s move toward rescheduling marijuana. While that new rule is not certain to take effect, the normalization signal the president’s decision itself sent—a message to America that marijuana is safe, that it can somehow be medicine—rang out all too clearly.
“The Youth Substance Use Prevention and Awareness Act points the way toward a better, safer, healthier future for every American.”
