WHITE HOUSE BUDGET WISELY CALLS FOR AN END TO FAILED PRACTICES THAT HAVE HEIGHTENED ADDICTION CRISIS

Budget Proposal Calls For An End to Funding for “Safe Smoking Kits and Supplies”

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Foundation from Drug Policy Solutions (FDPS) President and CEO Dr. Kevin Sabet, a former three-time White House drug policy advisor, released the following statement today in responses to the Trump Administration’s 2026 budget plan

“While we await more clarity on funding for other necessary drug control programs, it is heartening to see the Administration’s budget states clearly and definitively that they are ‘committed to combatting the scourge of deadly drugs that have ravaged American communities.’ Shifting federal drug policy away from radical, pro-drug policies like ‘safe smoking kits and supplies’ is laudable. These programs do little more than propel the false narrative that drug use can be safe, isn’t damaging, and should be normalized. Government should be advancing an approach to drug policy that empowers people to live lives free from addiction, rather than encourage drug use.

“However, FDPS remains staunch advocates for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s budget to include funding to promote research into drug use trends, like the NSDUH survey, and funding to support critical prevention programs and life-saving services like Naloxone. We look forward to continuing our dialogue with the Administration about how President Trump can heed the pleas of parents, law enforcement, medical professionals, and those working on the frontlines to address the nation’s addiction crisis.”
